Carla Trynchuk, Violinist

Carla Trynchuk has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras across the continent, including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (Canada). “Rewarding power, lyricism and persuasive passion.” (Sacramento Bee, Barber Violin Concerto with Carmellia Symphony Orchestra) As recitalist, she has performed throughout Asia, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and the United States including Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City. “Trynchuk held the audience breathless with sheer wonder at her technique.” (The Hindustan Times, Delhi, India) Trynchuk is a graduate of The Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under Dorothy DeLay.

 


Carlos de la Barrera, Classical Guitarist

Guitarist Carlos de la Barrera is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. His extensive South American performances include solo recitals in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. He has distinguished himself as a semifinalist at the 1993 Great Lakes Classical Guitar International Competition and winner of WGUC-FM’s Performing Artists Recital. His live broadcast was described as “beautifully executed” by Alan Scheidt, WGUC-FM conductor and music critic. Other recitals include special appearances in Texas, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. Renato Butturi, president of the Evansville Classical Guitar Society, wrote: “Barrera’s virtuosity and Latin style captivated the audience.” Carlos de la Barrera teaches classical and flamenco guitar at Calvin College, Aquinas College and Andrews University in Michigan.

 

Christa Grix

“The harp is to music what music is to life” begins this engaging look at the harp, using humor, poetry, anecdotes and, above all, great music. Christa is a unique performer who plays both classical and jazz with equal virtuosity. In between concert pieces, the audience is treated to an insightful and entertaining history and demonstration of the harp.


 


Flavio Varani, Pianist

Brazilian-born Flavio Varani toured as soloist with the Brazilian National Symphony at age 10. At 13, he studied with Magda Tagliaferro in Paris, then in New York with Rosina Lhevinne and Artur Balsam. A winner of many awards, he has performed in major music centers: Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Moscow Conservatory and Munich Gasteig; appeared in numerous music festivals including Newport, Meadow Brook, and Cotignac in France; shared orchestral engagements with conductors Lukas Foss, Gunther Herbig, Neville Marriner and Semyon Bychkov. Varani is currently artist in residence at Oakland University. “. . . Rich imagination . . . great rhythmic vitality . . .” (Le Guide du Concert, Paris).

 


Glenda Kirkland, Soprano

Glenda Kirkland has woven expressive vocal spells in many performances with opera companies, oratorio societies, symphony orchestras and in recital series in the United States. A perennial favorite with the Detroit Symphony, she has appeared in Strauss operas, Schubert and Brahms festivals, and in works by Hailstork and Gershwin. As a recitalist, Kirkland has been praised for her interpretive skills; radiant, charismatic stage presence; and especially her beautiful voice. Programming includes the classical greats in addition to works by African-American composers. Kirkland received her education at the Juilliard School and is currently a professor at Eastern Michigan University.

Guy Louis and his Chautauqua Express

Exciting, fast-paced, musical adventures for community and school audiences! Since 1986, Guy Louis has been performing Chautauqua Express musical programs for young people of all ages. Toddlers to grandparents enjoy his family shows and his warm humorous, interactive style makes this show perfect for theaters, concerts in the park and community events. School assemblies are unparalleled for their educational value and entertaining delivery with curriculum-enhancing themes, supported by pre- and post-show materials.

John Wunsch, Guitarist

Guitarist/composer John Wunsch has given audiences in in Europe, Japan, and the United States the kind of performances that are “pure enjoyment” (Baltimore Evening Sun). Declared “first rate” by Guitar Player Magazine, his programs combine classical, Hispanic, folk, and jazz repertoire with his own compositions on his recent CD Timeless Beauty ("a lovely collection of songs," Wisconsin State Journal) and Myths, Legends & Heroes. He enhances each program with informative narrative about the music. Wunsch also offers his Watershed Suite, a unique program for grade school students, which teaches concepts of conservation and water science through a musical performance. He teaches at Interlochen Arts Academy.

Music for Viola

Igor Fedotov, internationally known viola soloist, will present varying recital programs. They include an all-Russian program featuring the Glinka Viola Sonata and parts of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet among others, and music of Honegger, Brahms, Swedish composer Otto Freudenthal and Hindemith. Fedotov is on the faculty of Western Michigan University.

Onita Sanders, Contemporary Harpist and Singer

Onita Sanders, contemporary harpist and singer, presents an eclectic program with repertoire tailored to the audience. Folk music, spirituals, classical and jazz played on acoustic/electric harps with rhythm effects as well as her sweet lyric, soprano voice blend in a visual and aural delight. Audiences of all ages at art fairs, corporate functions, grand openings, and charity affairs have been charmed by her music.

Paul Vondiziano, Classical Guitarist

Cyprus-born classical guitarist Paul Vondiziano performs nationally and internationally. “. . . A soloist of distinction . . . an aristocrat among guitarists” (Evert Lutz, Delft News, The Netherlands). “. . . An excellent performer . . . what struck me from the very outset was his control of the wide range of colors . . . which can be coaxed from the guitar” (John Allen, Muskegon Chronicle). “. . . Superb guitarist . . . a sensitive musician in full command of his instrument” (Gerald Elliot, Grand Rapids Press). “Paul Vondiziano can be counted among the most capable and inspiring of today’s performers in the medium. . . . Technically, he exhibited playing so masterful as to create complete freedom for musical expression” (Charles Olegar, Grand Rapids Press). His recent compact disc is entitled J. S. Bach: The Four Lute Suites.

Pauline Martin, Pianist

Pauline Martin continues to dazzle her audiences, winning world-class recognition for her solo and chamber performances. Of her solo on the first-round Grammy-nominated compact disc Hobson’s Choice (the first of a series with Koch International Classics), Audio Adventure Magazine wrote, “Pauline Martin makes a meal of this one—her fast movements sparkle and the notes ripple off the keyboard with a life of their own.” Whether it’s a solo with the Detroit Symphony, a staging of the colossal Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg, or a last-minute collaboration with Aretha Franklin, one critic’s headline rings true: “Pauline Martin thrives on challenges. Martin’s Michigan fans will brave long commutes to catch her performances.” She is currently in residence at Wayne State and Oakland universities.

 

Pianist Rich Ridenour captivates audiences wherever he goes. It is rare to find an artist so versatile—equally at home with the classics, American pop, jazz, ragtime, and comedy, too! Ridenour tours the United States performing his own arrangements with orchestras and has two in-demand solo programs—Rags to Rich’s and the Keyboard Universe.
