Steven
Benson
Chi: The Cost of
Power in China
is a slide/lecture
presentation
consisting of
approximately 100
photographs Steven
Benson made along
400 miles of the
Yangtze River
valley in China to
be flooded upon the
completion of the
Three Gorges Dam.
Benson traveled
from Chongquing,
the
"terminus"
of the rising water
to Sandouping where
the dam is under
construction. The
people, villages,
cities, farmland,
archeological sites
and landscapes that
have inspired
poets, artists and
philosophers for
centuries will soon
disappear. The
physical effects of
the dam on this
valley are
difficult to
comprehend. To say
that two million
people must vacate
their ancestral
homes begins to
give some sense of
scale. Benson
discusses
controversial
issues surrounding
the dam
construction and
talks about his
experiences in
China while working
on this project. |
