Aerial Dance Theater

Aerial Dance Theater, a professional touring company in residence at Hope College, performs regularly throughout Michigan, the Midwest and beyond. The company’s contemporary, theatrical and multi-media repertory consists of works by the company directors as well as local and international choreographers. International dancers and performers regularly appear with the company as Aerial-sponsored artists for cross-cultural collaboration and community exposure. Aerial presents dance in a way that pushes emotions and understanding, bringing innovative and challenging imagery to the performance. The company’s purpose is to present a diverse contemporary movement experience that entertains, educates and stimulates its audiences.

Detroit Dance Collective

Detroit Dance Collective (DDC), a professional modern dance company founded in 1980, performs unique concerts and informative yet entertaining lecture demonstrations statewide. Young folks’ concerts (elementary through high school) include audience participation “in your seats” and “on stage.” Choreography by directors Barbara Selinger and Paula Kramer includes video and photo projections, surprising set décor, costumes and music. The company’s nine dancers are critically recognized as technically stunning, energetic and dramatic artists and are friendly, knowledgeable teachers. DDC instructs classes and workshops in modern, creative dance, ballet and jazz for all ages and levels.

 


Eisenhower Dance Ensemble

Artistic Director Laurie Eisenhower founded the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble (EDE), Michigan’s premier contemporary dance company, in 1991. An eclectic and versatile repertory company with seven dancers, the ensemble boasts works by Eisenhower and other internationally known choreographers. EDE presents Kids in Motion, an exciting lecture-demonstration program for elementary through high school students, and has worked with school districts throughout the state in residency projects. EDE has toured nationally and to St. Petersburg, Russia. From classical sophistication to contemporary vibrance, EDE’s stunning performances have dazzled audiences for a decade.

Happendance

Happendance, a 24-year-old contemporary dance company, provides annual public performances and outreach education programs. Under strong artistic leadership, Happen-dance concerts offer original choreography which has broad appeal and accessibility to mature and new audiences alike. In addition, an ongoing commitment exists to include themes of importance to society, whether it is nondiscrimination (Chicken Lips, Sneetches), preserving threatened rainforests (Treasures in the Treetops) or protecting threatened wildlife such as wolves (Crepitant Whispers). The school-based Lecture-Demonstration Team purposefully couples children’s literature and dance with appropriate music and costuming (The Paper Crane, Stellaluna).

 


 

Peter Sparling Dance Company

Dynamic, evocative and edgy. Lyrical, passionate and dramatic. The Peter Sparling Dance Company (PSDC) embodies the adventurous spirit of modern dance in bold performances of Sparling’s original choreography and classic works by Martha Graham. PSDC’s innovative use of text, original musical scores and multi-media sets both delight and engage audiences. Premiering this season is the dance/opera Orfeo and Euridice. PSDC features an extensive repertory and educational programs including lecture-demonstrations, master classes and workshops for all ages.

 


Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers

Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers is the only professional modern dance company in southwest Michigan, presenting performances featuring works choreographed by artistic director Cori Terry, veteran company member Michael Miller and guest choreographers. This extraordinary company of poetic and athletic dancers is committed to revealing the language of modern dance to adults and children alike. Critics have called Wellspring’s work dramatic, impassioned, seamless, compelling, exuberant and life-affirming.
