5th Michigan Regiment Band

The 5th Michigan Regiment Band is a historical re-creation of a Civil War Regimental “Field” Band consisting of musicians, color guard and support personnel. The band performs at concerts, reenactments, parades, school presentations and special events and has a repertoire of pre-1865 compositions. The music is performed on antique and replica over-the-shoulder, upright, frontal saxhorns and wood rope tension drums. Some performances include historical information about the music, instruments, members’ attire, flags, weapons and customs of the Civil War period. This material is presented in music, brief lectures, demonstrations and audience participation.



 


Encore Society of Music

Encore Winds/Voices perform a full range of selections from traditional to jazz. Concerts feature themes like Broadway, jazz, Celtic music and children’s stories interpreted by dance. Concerts may also feature the Encore Brass Quintet, Encore Trio or Quintet, or a Jazz Ensemble. Encore is available for school/ community events, focusing on entertaining theme concerts and quality music. Upon listening to Encore’s compact disc, Rhapsody by the Bay, one listener described Encore winds as “world class!”



The Dodworth Saxhorn Band

The Dodworth Saxhorn Band is a faithful re-creation of the mid-19th-century brass bands that entertained citizens of Michigan at various public gatherings including social events, political rallies and military balls. The Dod-worth Saxhorn Band’s selections are music arrangements supplied by The Smith-sonian Institute, The Library of Congress and private collections. The uniforms worn by the musicians are dress of the 19th century. The band presents historical, musical and educational concerts of the 19th century and is available for Victorian balls with costumed dance instructors, concerts, Civil War reenactments and short parades.

The Night Lights Big Band featuring Paul King

The Night Lights Big Band is a full, 18-piece big band that plays all styles of big-band music. The band plays arrangements from the big-band era (1935–50) that feature Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Stan Kenton and many others. In existence since 1994 and noted for its ballroom and swing music, the group has played at political rallies, Troy High School with the Troy High School Jazz Band, concerts (indoor and outdoor) and many other functions.

Lonesome & Blue

Lonesome & Blue (L&B) is a classic and original hard-driving bluegrass band that features instrumental virtuosity and traditional bluegrass singing. The band’s new compact disc, Out of the Blue, received three nominations at the Detroit Music Awards last year and gained the group recognition via radio airplay throughout the United States. L&B has just increased to a five-piece ensemble, producing a larger sound with more versatility. Last year, the group performed at folk festivals, bluegrass festivals and a wide variety of outdoor and indoor concerts.

Oktoben German Band

An enjoyable experience awaits audiences of the Oktoben German Band. Performing a variety of music including marches, ethnic folk songs and dances like the Scottish waltz and polka, the band chooses the right combination of music to make any performance memorable. Programs are narrated in English and German with fun and interesting stories behind many of the songs. Oktoben’s music has been enjoyed at Octoberfests, ethic festivals, art fairs, private parties and community concerts.

The Gratitude Steel Band

The Gratitude Steel Band/Eguana-En-Ekele (Yoraba language) has six shows to choose from: Caribbean, Reggae, African, Classical, Hawaiian and World Jazz. Students learn about the history of the steel drums, music style, geographic locations and composer contributions. This information is scaled to grade levels K–12 and all ages. Hands-on experience and visual aids are included in these fun programs. This fantastic array of cultural music enhances fun, social understanding and cultural awareness. All shows end with or include limbo and conga line fun. Join the Conga Train!

The Raisin Pickers

If you’ve never heard the Raisin Pickers, then you’ve missed a rare musical treat. From swing to ballads, from contemporary bluegrass to under-appreciated classics, from waltzes to tangos, they bring a wonderful enthusiasm and enjoyment to all the music they play. On guitar, bass, mandolin, fiddle and even an assortment of banjos, they combine fast and furious soloing with three-part harmonies, jazz influences with modern folk, Celtic and acoustic swing; as a band, they combine the very best qualities of the different types of music resulting in a uniquely fascinating and entertaining musical potpourri.
